Shadow Play : A Movement Workshop Through Imagination, Play & Possibility
SHADOW PLAY
A Movement Workshop Through Imagination, Play & Possibility
As the season turns and the veil between worlds grows thin, we are invited to notice what quietly lives beneath the surface.
The ways we hold back.
Push too hard.
Lose ourselves in the noise.
Perform the version of ourselves we think the room wants.
Disappear when we'd rather not be seen.
We all have our moves.
And given enough time, practice has a way of revealing them.
Shadow Play is a weekend-long movement workshop rooted in the 5Rhythms® Shadow Map—an embodied exploration of the patterns that shape how we move through the dance floor, our relationships, our creativity, and our lives.
Through movement, expressive arts, imagination, ritual theatre, live music, and play, we'll give these patterns somewhere to go besides around and around in our heads.
We'll give them a body.
A shape.
A gesture.
A voice.
Maybe even a sense of humor.
And then we'll see what else becomes possible.
THE SHADOW MAP
The 5Rhythms® practice moves through five rhythms—Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, and Stillness.
Each rhythm carries an essential quality of being. And each has a shadow: the places where that energy can become distorted, restricted, exaggerated, performed, or stuck.
These shadows aren't character flaws.
They're human strategies.
And chances are, you've danced with a few of them.
FLOWING invites us into receptivity, grounding, instinct, and trust.
Its shadow, inertia, is the place where movement gets stuck. We drag our feet. Procrastinate. Collapse. Wait for motivation to arrive. We know something needs to shift, yet somehow we cannot get ourselves moving.
STACCATO gives us clarity, direction, boundaries, passion, and the ability to choose.
In shadow, that same energy can harden into rigidity, control, force, or the relentless need to get it right.
CHAOS teaches release—the capacity to loosen our grip, move with uncertainty, and let something larger than our plans have a say.
Its shadow, confusion, is what happens when we lose the thread. Everything is moving, but we have no idea where we're going. Uncontrolled. Scattered. Disoriented. We spin in too many directions, unable to find our footing or make sense of what comes next.
LYRICAL opens the territory of imagination, authenticity, creativity, and possibility.
Its shadow is a particularly clever performer.
We become who we think we're supposed to be. We shape-shift for approval. We make ourselves palatable. We say the right thing, wear the right face, read the room—and somewhere in all that adaptation, lose track of what is actually true.
The people-pleasing two-step:
One step forward. One step back.
STILLNESS brings us toward presence, perspective, compassion, and the ability to simply be with what is here.
Its shadow can pull us toward numbness, disconnection, withdrawal, or disappearing altogether.
You may recognize yourself immediately in one of these.
You may recognize yourself in all five.
Good. You're human.
And recognizing the pattern is only the beginning.
BECAUSE KNOWING YOUR PATTERN ISN'T THE SAME AS MOVING IT
You can understand perfectly well that you're a people pleaser and still say yes when your entire body means no.
You can know you have control issues and still feel your jaw tighten the second the plan changes.
You can have tremendous insight into why you shut down, over-perform, disappear, cling, push, accommodate, or resist—and still find yourself doing exactly the same thing when life turns up the volume.
The body learns through experience.
So rather than standing outside these patterns and analyzing them, we'll step inside them.
The Shadow Map becomes a compass rather than a prescription, helping us move between each rhythm's shadow and its essential nature.
Rigidity may reveal clarity.
Resistance may uncover release.
Performance may make room for something more authentic.
Disconnection may begin finding its way toward presence.
There is no predetermined answer we're trying to reach.
I'd much rather see what your body discovers.
WHY PLAY WITH SHADOW?
Because shadow can get awfully serious when we only talk about it.
Play gives us another way in.
Through movement and imagination, we can become curious about patterns we've spent years judging, hiding, managing, or trying to improve.
We can exaggerate them.
Interrupt them.
Try something ridiculous.
Make another choice.
Discover a movement we didn't know was available.
And in a room full of other bodies doing the same thing, we begin to recognize something else:
We aren't the only ones with these moves.
Our stories may be different, but the ways human beings protect, brace, accommodate, control, disappear, resist, and perform ourselves are remarkably familiar.
Shadow becomes less something lurking in the dark...
and more material for imagination.
Something we can move with and learn from.
We might even be lead somewhere we haven't been before.
FRIDAY NIGHT, OCTOBER 2: WE OPEN THE DOORS
Friday evening is a three-hour, open/drop-in exploration and your entry point into the world of Shadow Play.
We'll move through the 5Rhythms® Shadow Map, begin exploring the relationship between shadow and essence, and use movement and imagination to notice some of our familiar moves.
Come for the evening.
Come curious.
Come shake your ass.
No previous 5Rhythms or movement experience is required.
SATURDAY + SUNDAY: WE PULL BACK THE CURTAIN
For those joining us for the full weekend, the room gets smaller and the inquiry goes deeper.
With more time and a more intimate container, we'll move through the Shadow Map using 5Rhythms®, expressive arts, imagination, ritual theatre, live music, creative inquiry, witnessing, and play.
We're not arriving with a prescribed idea of what your shadow should look like.
I'd much rather see what shows up in the room.
What happens when stuckness gets a shape?
When rigidity gets a dance?
When the part of you that always knows how to behave gets permission to misbehave a little?
When something you've tucked away gets some space, some music, and perhaps a little mischief?
That is where things tend to get interesting.
COME PLAY WITH US
Join 5Rhythms® accredited teacher and Somatic Expressive Artist Alyssa Jurewicz Johns, playwright, director, and Jungian Analyst Lena Rose Williams, and musician, producer, and dancer Drew Bayura for a weekend of movement, creativity, live music, imagination, and embodied discovery.
EARLY BIRD
Early Bird registration is available to the first 10 full-weekend participants.
Once those 10 spaces are claimed, registration moves to general pricing.
Saturday + Sunday are intentionally kept smaller to support the depth and intimacy of the work.
If something in you is curious, follow it.
You don't have to know what you're looking for.
That's rather the point.

RENDEZVOUS
RENDEZVOUS
A Fall 5Rhythms® Practice Series
There are appointments we keep because we have to.
And then there are the ones that bring us back to life.
Rendezvous is six weeks of practice.
No big theme to master.
No destination we're trying to reach.
We meet and put down the week.
Turn off the devices, dim the lights, turn up the music, and give the body somewhere to go.
Wave after wave.
Through Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness, we'll practice the 5Rhythms® map as it was meant to be practiced: through the body, over time, together.
But this is fall.
The light is changing.
The nights are getting longer.
And something about dancing after dark leaves a little more room for imagination and the strange sparks that appear when we stop trying so hard to know what comes next.
Consider Rendezvous a standing appointment with your body.
A meeting place.
A refuge.
A little moonlight mischief in the middle of your week.
Six weeks.
Same floor.
Same practice.
Whatever happens when the music starts?
Meet me there.

Oct 20 // 27 // Nov 3 // 10 // 17 // 24
This series is designed for those seeking a grounded, body-based movement practice -whether you are new to somatic dance or a long-time dancer looking to deepen your relationship with the practice. The emphasis is not on performance or aesthetic movement, but on presence, sensation, and honest expression.
RENDEZVOUS is a closed container.
Because somatic work and embodied practice deepen through continuity and trust, this six-week series is offered as a committed experience. There are no drop-ins or one-off classes. This structure supports nervous system safety, relational consistency, and the depth that comes from practicing together over time.
Together, we will work with the wave as a living practice, tracking sensation, expression, and change as it unfolds in the body.
No choreography. No performance.
No fixing.
Just a floor. A beat. And a body that already knows the way.
Unify : An Exploration of the Mature Masculine
UNIFY
A 5Rhythms Exploration of the Mature Masculine with Jeffrey Boyton
Connected. Visionary. Focused. Empowering.
These qualities of the mature masculine are subverted by the patriarchy, the lying politician, the abusive lover, and the gangster; symptomatic of a society that disproportionately reveres the boy masquerading as man. The immature masculine has its place in the vital and vibrant spark of boyhood. When it fails to develop and takes the place of mature masculine awareness and leadership in the actions of men and perceptions of women, all are wounded.
In this weekend Waves workshop for all people, we will try on the many shapes of the masculine, tapping our body intelligence to sift and move the stories and patterns, and distilling the essence of our present awareness of masculine energy into embodied action.
Attention to those areas that are stirred and vulnerable in us is a gift to all and yields the possibility of action.
Are you finding it necessary to turn away from the parade of wounded boys masquerading as men demanding our every moment's obsession with their misbehavior and rash decisions? Has it infected your perception of what the masculine is here to do in the world...in your life? Are you listening for the mature response and the possibility of change?
The mature masculine is an essential energy that supports us in seeing with discernment, bringing our personal power to an intuitive focal point, accomplishing visionary goals, and connecting from a place of vulnerability and truth.
Unify, a full weekend 5Rhythms® exploration is a turning towards, a reclamation of the bold playful empowering masculine essence within. We will spend time in connection - with the self, with the other, with the unified collective, witnessing and co-creating all the prayers we can sweat and put these bodies of ours into motion towards healing this great wound at the source of so much pain.
Jeffery has a vision of men and women healing this pain, together, remembering what the masculine and feminine essential imprints look like as we call into our being a reordering, a unification.
Breath by breath, transforming chaos and crisis into creativity and connection.
About Jeffrey Boynton
Certified 5Rhythms Teacher, Member 5RTA
Jeffrey has been practicing 25 years and teaching since 2014. He holds a generous grounded space of gentle masculine presence for each of us to find our feet on the path of alignment between what we think, what we feel, and what we do. The gift of this alignment and awareness is increased personal and communal resilience, a vital resource in this age of Chaos.

Ripple Effect : A 6 week 5Rhythms Practice Series
Tuesdays 6:30PM to 8:30PM
Metta Healing Arts
5118 Penn Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15224
August 11 // 18 // 25 // September 1 // 8 // 15
Every rhythm is a master teacher.
Flowing teaches us how to trust.
Staccato teaches us how to choose.
Chaos teaches us how to surrender.
Lyrical teaches us how to become lighter.
Stillness teaches us how to remember.
We begin practicing 5Rhythms by learning the Wave.
Over time, something begins to shift.
We start recognizing these rhythms beyond the dance floor—in the way we move through our relationships, navigate uncertainty, make decisions, respond to change, and meet the ordinary moments of everyday life.
Ripple Effect is a six-week practice container devoted to deepening that relationship.
Together, we'll dance each rhythm while exploring how it lives within us. We'll notice what comes naturally, what challenges us, and what becomes possible through the simple act of returning to the practice, week after week.
As the weeks unfold, something quiet begins to happen.
Our awareness expands.
Our reactions soften.
We find more space to breathe before responding.
We trust ourselves a little more.
Every dance creates a ripple.
A conversation unfolds differently.
A boundary becomes easier to hold.
A difficult season feels more navigable.
Joy arrives unexpectedly.
Presence becomes more available.
These are the ripple effects of practice.
Beginning in the fullness of August and moving toward the Autumn Equinox, we'll gather in community to dance, reflect, sweat, laugh, and remember what it feels like to inhabit our bodies fully.
This series is open to both new and experienced dancers. Whether this is your first committed practice or your fiftieth, the invitation is the same: show up with curiosity rather than perfection.
Because practice doesn't make us perfect.
Practice makes us present.
And presence has a way of changing everything.
Eventually, the dance floor disappears.
All that's left is your life.
How will you dance it?
This series is designed for those seeking a grounded, body-based movement practice -whether you are new to somatic dance or a long-time dancer looking to deepen your relationship with the practice. The emphasis is not on performance or aesthetic movement, but on presence, sensation, and honest expression.

Heat Wave : A 6 week 5Rhythms Practice Series

Metta Healing Arts

May 26 // June 2 // 9 // 16 // 23 // 30
It’s summer and you don’t need another way to think about your life.
You need a place to loosen your grip.
This 6-week 5Rhythms series is a space to get out of your head and back into your body—
through rhythm, sweat, and what’s real.
Because summer doesn’t hold on tight.
It softens, opens.
and moves.
Things loosen.
Patterns shift.
Energy finds its way again.
The question is -
can you let it?
Each week we will orient around one of the five rhythms - Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, and Stillness - not as concepts to master, but as states of being explored through somatic movement and dance. These rhythms offer a map for embodiment, emotional expression, nervous system regulation, and creative inquiry.
This series is designed for those seeking a grounded, body-based movement practice -whether you are new to somatic dance or a long-time dancer looking to deepen your relationship with the practice. The emphasis is not on performance or aesthetic movement, but on presence, sensation, and honest expression.

The Center for Creativity & Dance, 287 East 10th Street

Body Waves is a weekly 5Rhythms class in the heart of the East Village, where we come to sweat, release, and move with intention. This isn’t just another dance class—it’s a ritual, a rebellion, a return.
Led by NYC-based teachers Meghan LeBorious, Karen Ritscher, and now Alyssa Jurewicz Johns, each Friday night we move through the 5Rhythms—Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, and Stillness—awakening the wisdom of the body and the wildness of the soul.
No choreography. No mirrors. Just breath, the beat, and your beautiful, untamed body.
- Come solo or bring your people.
- Come moody, wild, messy—just come real.
- Come to reconnect, to remember, to tune in.
Whether you're a seasoned mover or stepping in for the first time, you're welcome here.
Because on this dance floor—we don't judge, we witness.
We don't perform, we transform.

Wave After Wave : A 6-Week 5Rhythms® Practice Series
WAVE AFTER WAVE
A 6-Week 5Rhythms® Somatic Dance Practice Series
Wave After Wave is a six-week 5Rhythms® practice series devoted to somatic movement, conscious dance, and embodied awareness.
5Rhythms is a form of somatic dance and movement meditation—a practice that uses rhythm, breath, and sensation to help people reconnect with their bodies, regulate their nervous systems, and access deeper self-awareness through movement. There is no choreography to learn and no previous dance experience required. The practice is about listening inward and allowing the body to move as it needs to.
Each class in this series holds two full waves, creating time to slow down, repeat, and deepen into the experience of embodied movement. Rather than moving quickly from theme to theme, this series emphasizes practice through repetition - allowing the body to learn, integrate, and respond over time.
Each week we will orient around one of the five rhythms—Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, and Stillness - not as concepts to master, but as states of being explored through somatic movement and dance.
Wave After Wave is a closed container.
Because somatic work and embodied practice deepen through continuity and trust, this six-week series is offered as a committed experience. There are no drop-ins or one-off classes. This structure supports nervous system safety, relational consistency, and the depth that comes from practicing together over time.
This is not about dancing better.
It is about inhabiting the body more fully.
About returning—wave after wave—to sensation, rhythm, and truth.

The Silent Pulse: A 6-Week 5Rhythms® Series Through the Winter Passage
The Silent Pulse
A 6-Week 5Rhythms® Series through the Winter Passage
December 2 – January 13 (skipping Dec. 23)
Tuesdays | 6:30–8:30 PM | Metta Healing Arts, Pittsburgh
At the Heart of It All, There Is a Pulse.
A rhythm that hums beneath thought, beyond words.
The body knows it. The Earth knows it.
And when we slow down enough to listen
we can hear the silent pulse that connects us to everything.
Winter invites us inward.
It strips away distraction and noise until all that’s left
is the soft thrum beneath the surface
the quiet wisdom that’s been there all along.
In The Silent Pulse, we’ll move through the 5Rhythms® map
Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, and Stillness
as a way of traversing the inner landscape of winter.
Each rhythm becomes a doorway -
to listen with the whole body,
to breathe with what remains,
to rest in the spaces between.
This is where we metabolize experience through motion,
and remember that even in stillness, something sacred stirs.
The Silver Desert: The Stillness That Holds It All
Gabrielle Roth spoke of The Silver Desert
that luminous space of inner quiet where movement becomes prayer.
A place of emptiness and fullness all at once.
The dance that happens not under stage lights, but under moonlight.
A holy hush before the fire.
Here, the body becomes the priestess of the pause
listening to the subtle undercurrents,
knowing when to wait, when to listen, and when to leap.
Right action arises not from pressure, but from presence.
In stillness, we discover the part of ourselves that is both the wave and the witness.
Where We’ll Go Together
Each week, we’ll journey through one rhythm at a time
exploring how it lives in your body, psyche, and spirit.
You’ll be guided through movement, breath, and reflection
to access the medicine each rhythm holds.
This is a reclamation of the body as both compass and sanctuary.
As you move, you may find yourself :
Softening into what is, instead of pushing against it.
Listening for your body’s own timing and truth.
Noticing the quiet difference between effort and emergence.
Letting stillness meet momentum, and presence become prayer.
Artmaking Meets Meditation
This series weaves together the movement practice of 5Rhythms® with the contemplative art of creation.
Each week, we’ll explore how the rhythm of stillness can become a channel for creativity, connection, and ritual ; crafting, writing, and making art as extensions of our dance.
We’ll deepen into seated meditation and breath-based practices, allowing the inner currents of movement to ripple into stillness.
This is artmaking as meditation — a way to translate what the body knows into color, image, and form.
Oh yes, we’ll still be dancing through waves,
but the essence of this winter practice is softer, slower, and deeply restorative.
Each session will be bookended with practices of self-regulation, reflection, and rest,
inviting you to honor the full arc of movement, stillness, and renewal.
Why We Dance
As George Leonard wrote:
“At the heart of each of us, whatever our imperfections,
there exists a silent pulse of perfect rhythm…
absolutely individual and unique,
and yet which connects us to everything in the universe.”
This practice is how we find that pulse again
not in thinking, but in moving.
Not in talking, but in listening.
Not in doing, but in being moved.
For those feeling the pull inward
This is for the ones listening for something deeper
who are tired of the noise,
who crave quiet movement, honest breath,
and the slow medicine of winter.
For those walking the edge between exhaustion and renewal,
ready to soften, listen, and let the body lead them home.
Investment: $210 / 6 weeks
Where: Metta Healing Arts, Pittsburgh
When: Tuesdays, 6:30–8:30 PM

Through the practice of collective movement we are privileged to experience ourselves as prepared, present, passionate, principled and potent.
When we set aside the quality time and claim the space for moving our life metaphors, and when we assume the authority to do so, we are able to transform our perceptions, our perspectives, our experiences, and in the process, our reality.

Mind. Body. Money
A movement-based workshop to unpack your money story and shift it with your whole being
What if your beliefs about money aren’t just in your mind, but living in your body?
Your money stories live as patterns of energy in your body. These patterns shape how you think, feel, and act, and your actions create your financial reality. When you explore these patterns with your body & breath, you can start to shift them. This is where real change begins: from the inside out. You are not defined by your past, your upbringing, or your experiences with money. This is your chance to start fresh.
Join Somatic Expressive Arts Therapist Alyssa Jurewicz Johns and Money Mindset Coach GianCarlo Lies for a one-of-a-kind workshop that blends mindset work with movement and reflection. Because changing your relationship with money takes more than spreadsheets.
This isn’t a finance class. No pie charts. No budgets. No shame. Just your body, your story, and some curious exploration.
We’ll uncover hidden beliefs like “Money is the root of all evil” or “I’m just not good with money.” Through journaling, group sharing, simple movement & relational play, you’ll learn where those stories came from, and how to start letting them go.
Whether you’ve been hustling for years or are just beginning to unpack your money mindset, this is your invitation to get curious (not critical), and take a new step forward.
🧠 For your mind
💃🏽 For your body
💰 For your future
No dance experience needed. Just bring your full self - stories, skepticism, and all.
